Abstract
Art coaching is a psychological-morphological technique which uses the observation and discussion of selected art works to promote access to heretofore unvoiced and uncon- scious mental patterns, thus creating opportunities for self-reflection. The study described here, which was carried out at the Institute for Sexology and Sexual Medicine of the CharitéBerlin in 2014, investigated whether art coaching can be useful as part of the real-life test for people with gen- der dysphoria (GD); real-life testing attempts to determine in advance whether transsexual patients will be able to cope with life in the new gender. The painting used in the study, Vincent van Gogh’s The Bridge at Arles (1888), shows a woman crossing over a small drawbridge. The close obser- vation and discussion of the picture were meant to evoke a confrontation with the GD patients’ transitional situation, the transformation from their present biological to their desired gender. The five patients in the study, all woman-to-man transsexuals, were at different stages in their individual real- life experiences. The art coaching sessions were carried out individually with each patient. The results were summarized and evaluated using qualitative morphological research methods. It could be shown that the art-based contemp- lation of transitional situations is useful for the therapeutic process of the real-life test.
