Abstract
Sexual behavior can be observed already during the devel- opment ofthe human embryo. Later children want to explore both their own sexual organs and those of others. On the one hand, children need space and freedom to discover their sexuality undisturbed and without adult proscription; on the other hand, adult guidance is necessary as well. The text describes in a broad context the specific elements of the sexual development of young children with the goal of raising the awareness of deficits of sexual education in pedagogical training and practice. The article also discusses the need to protect teachers of young children from unjustified accusa- tions of sexual abuse as well as children from sexual assault in day-care centers and early schooling.
