Abstract
The aim of the present study was to assess the treatment of persons with sexual dysfunctions by alternative practitioners in Germany. To this end, a survey in the form of a short question- naire was sent to established German alternative practitioners who focus on psychotherapy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy, phytotherapy, osteopathy, kine- siology, aromatherapy and bioenergetics. 1.730 people were contacted online and by mail with a response rate of 6.18% (N=107). The canvassed alternative practitioners treat an aver- age of 310 people per year, of whom 3.77% seek help for sex- ual dysfunction. The range of frequency of sexual dysfunction (0.77% to 5.20%) suggests a low level of sexual therapeutic specialization, but nonetheless alternative practitioners tend to consider themselves competent in treating sexual disorders. Patients with sexual dysfunctions are treated by alternative practitioners in all specializations and are rarely referred fur- ther. The interviewees noted an undersupply of sexual therapy and sexual medicine.
