Abstract

That sexual health is inseparable from social security was known to the scholars of the 1920s, but that the sluggish German medical bureaucracy should take responsibility in this area was emphasized and made possible by the Berlin physi- cian Martin Gumpert. Gumpert organized the first counseling center for skin and venereal diseases, and later for “social cosmetics.” Persecuted by the Nazis, he fled first into the ivory tower of medical history and then to the USA, where he became a preceptor of geriatrics. In addition, he professionalized popu- lar scientific prevention work in his new homeland.
