Abstract

Sexual education professionals should themselves be sufficiently educated. Currently, however, there is no binding profile of training requirements. Basic university education for this professional group is available only at a few institutions. Expert opinions on the requirements for teaching sexual education first appeared in the new millennium – above all in specialized articles that are seldom related to each other. The sex education specialist should have basic knowledge in three areas of competence: personal, social, and professional. He or she should be familiar with the essential special qualifications which ensure that the special features of sexuality-related learning are conveyed. Being able to act thoughtfully and knowledgeably in diverse, multi-heterogeneous target groups in sexual education is a very high standard that can be achieved, if only approximately, through practical contact and continuous (self-)reflection. Mere interest in the topic and enthusiasm for sexual education are not enough to be a successful sex-education teacher. This also requires solid know-how and the realization that the acquisition of differentiated knowledge remains an ongoing task. With such awareness the danger of overestimating the effectiveness of sex education for sexual satisfaction and happiness in life, and of developing fantasies of omnipotence as a sex educator can be averted.
