Abstract

Since 1980 the Federal Center for Health Education (BZgA) has regularly conducted the representative survey Youth Sexuality. This continuous monitoring generates findings on the sexual and reproductive health of young people in Germany, which form an important basis for evidence-based health communication. This paper uses the representative data of the ninth survey (2019) to take a deeper look at school-based sexuality education, the topics covered there, and the knowledge needs of young people. A total of N = 6,032 young people aged 14–25 participated in the combined oral-written interviews (CAPI). A key finding of the ninth wave of the Youth Sexuality Study is once again the great importance of sexuality education in schools. Especially for young people who have no contact persons for sexual questions in their family environment, this instance is indispensable. However, although most young people consider themselves to be subjectively informed, there is also a need for knowledge, especially about sexual practices and STIs. As an implication of the ninth iteration of the Youth Sexuality Study, it is important to maintain the commitment in the field of sexual health promotion. Only in this way can the sexual and reproductive health and sexual self-determination of the next generation be guaranteed.
