Abstract

Video-based online psychotherapy is increasingly the subject of research. The studies often discuss the advantages and/or disadvantages of this new technology as compared with face-to-face psychotherapy – especially in regard to specific client groups. The research project described here examines (with a qualitative-quantitative mixed methods design) the use of video-based psychotherapy in a specialized outpatient clinic with people who have committed sexual and violent offenses. Treatment pro-viders discuss their experiences and views on face-to-face vs. video-based online psychotherapy. The results indicate that there are both advantages and disadvantages of video-based psychotherapy for this specific clientele. Client attributes influence the preference of the practioners. In keeping with the responsivity principle of the RNR (Risk-need-responsivity) approach, the providers made differing recommendations for face-to-face and video-based psychotherapy: When the patient lives far away, has at least average intelligence, is at low to moderate risk of relapse, and has moderate to high motivation for therapy, video-based psychotherapy or an alternation of face-to-face and video appointments tend to be preferred. In contrast, language and cognitive limitations as well as a high psychopathy score and personality disorders lead to a preference for face-to-face treatment. Future research will verify the exploratory findings.
