Abstract
This article deals with the theoretical and empirical foundations as well as the relevance of diversity and diversity competence, as demanded not least by the increasing differentiation of gender roles. The effects of an affirmative approach to diversity – e.g. the ability for inclusion and cooperative collaboration – are shown in comparison to the negative effects of a lack of the corresponding skills. In addition, the example of diversity-sensitive pedagogy is used to discuss how diversity competence can be developed. Findings from the current state of research are also presented. Overall, the importance and integration of diversity skills for educational and social development processes are emphasized.
