Abstract
In modern societies, the ways in which people form and maintain relationships have changed; e.g. polyamory has emerged alongside monogamy. Focusing on attachment anxiety and avoidance, this study examines whether there are differences with regard to sexual satisfaction and attachment experiences between people living in polyamorous and monogamous relationships. To answer this question, an observational study was conducted with monogamous and polyamorous individuals to explore the general differences between these two relationship forms. Specifically, the study asked whether polyamorous individuals experience greater sexual satisfaction than monogamous individuals and whether monogamous individuals show lower attachment anxiety than their polyamorous counterparts. Data collection involved a 10-minute online survey in which sexual satisfaction was measured using the New Sexual Satisfaction Scale (NSSS-SD) (α = .93), and attachment anxiety and avoidance were assessed with the Experiences in Close Relationships – Revised (ECR-RD) (α = .94). The study (N = 189) found that polyamorous individuals have higher sexual satisfaction. Contrary to expectations, monogamous individuals showed higher attachment anxiety than polyamorous individuals. These findings suggest that polyamorous relationships may be motivated by the need for sexual satisfaction. The study also shows that attachment is not a determining factor in this decision. The results may contribute to the destigmatization of polyamory and provide a foundation for future research to further explore the motivations for choosing specific relationship concepts.
