Abstract

In therapeutic settings, shame, lack of information and heteronormative concepts often hinder an open and informed discussion of topics such as romance, sexuality, attachment and offspring, which determine individual life concepts and can also contribute to well-being and resilience to mental disorders. The text presents the development of a semi-structured interview guide that can support the assessment of individual life concepts, resources, possible conflicts or barriers. For the pilot study, seven interested persons (n = 4 clinical sample, n = 3 non-clinical sample) were interviewed. The guide was checked for comprehensibility and applicability with the help of an evaluation form for the participants and an observation form for observers. After revision, the questions were found to be easy to understand and suitable for mapping the participants‘ own life concepts. This was particularly the case for the areas of romance and sexuality and, to a somewhat lesser extent, for attachment and offspring. The duration of the interview (M = 4:45 h:min) was considered acceptable by the participants, although the length varied considerably (s = 2:03 h:min) and there were indications of differences for the clinical and non-clinical subsamples. Further revisions are necessary to improve applicability. An evaluation scheme based on the Bern model (Grawe, 1998, 2004) is currently being developed.
