Abstract
The drive is facing difficult times. It is contested not least in the name of the appealingly affective. And yet this article argues for the productivity of psychoanalytic drive theory, the potential of which has not yet been exhausted. The point of this text is to show how insightful it is to think of affect in the context of the drive, how a vocabulary of drive, beyond dichotomies, can take account of the interwoven relation between representative and affect and can also open up a political dimension as may be of importance for gender research as well. The article explores affect in several approaches and details, focusing on the following aspects: the wandering affect, the retroactive affect, the surplus affect, the affect as by-product and the affect that does not have the last word.
