Abstract
Dealing with sexual issues and interpersonal relationships shapes the way children and young people grow up. These issues play an important role in everyday school life. Schools are legally on an equal footing with parents when it comes to sex education. Their role is to enable children and young people to deal responsibly with love, sexuality and relationships, including respect for boundaries and protection from sexualized violence. Teachers and other educational professionals should therefore be qualified confidants for pupils, but they are often not sufficiently qualified or have personal inhibitions about dealing professionally with the topic of sexuality in a school context. Personal biases, attitudes and experiences influence pedagogical competence. On the other hand, there are very few opportunities for reflection and professionalisation in the initial and in-service training of school professionals. The curriculum “Sexuality Education for the Teaching Profession 2.0 – Learning to Love | Teaching to Love” fills this gap. The curriculum was made possible through a collaboration between Merseburg University of Applied Sciences and Reckitt, an international company known for its DUREX brand. Merseburg University of Applied Sciences is the central sexology location in Germany, combining social science and medical perspectives and offering the only free consecutive sexology course in the German-speaking world. The university has made a name for itself in the development of sex education curricula.
